The North Fork of Long Island is fast becoming a hotspot for wine lovers, with its rustic charm and sophisticated offerings drawing oenophiles from near and far. A quick jaunt from New York City, this scenic stretch is undergoing a transformation, marrying its evolving wineries with a flourishing hospitality scene.
Wine Country Re-imagined
With over 50 wineries scattered across the landscape, the North Fork offers a treasure trove for wine enthusiasts. Given the region's unique terroir—shaped by maritime microclimates and well-draining soils, it’s hard not to think of the similarities to Bordeaux. Thus it’s no surprise that North Fork wineries are now producing wines that are turning heads and challenging perceptions of East Coast offerings. Moreover, this is a wine region in full-on development – after all, Long Island wineries only date to the 1970s.
An Evolving Wine-tasting landscape
On a recent scouting trip, we were impressed with the diversity of wine-tasting experiences on offer. Sparkling Pointe's use of méthode champenoise is producing a wide variety of sparkling wines that caught our attention. A new tasting room at Main & Mill looks like it could be straight out of the pages of Vogue, and its on-site bites invite you to linger all day, with highlights such as honey goat cheese dip and tater poppers with caviar. This kind of focus on an elevated hospitality experience is relatively new in the North Fork, yet growing with every new harvest.
Luxury accommodations and services
The North Fork's accommodation options are also getting a serious upgrade. Beloved old-school motels are being revamped, keeping their nostalgic appeal while adding modern touches. Take the Silver Sands Motel in Greenport: this 1957 gem reopened in 2023 after a thoughtful facelift. Now, guests can enjoy retro vibes with contemporary comforts, plus a private beach and a waterside oyster bar that begs you to stay longer than you intended.
New boutique hotels are also raising the bar. The Shoals Suites & Slips in Southold, which debuted in late 2021, offers waterfront elegance and top-notch amenities. Meanwhile, The Menhaden Hotel in Greenport, open since 2019, has quickly become a go-to for discerning travelers, complete with Macari Vineyards experiences and complimentary bikes for exploring.
Culinary Adventures
The North Fork's food scene is a perfect match for its wines. Farm-to-table restaurants and local markets showcase the region's agricultural bounty. The annual North Fork Foodie Tour, now in its 19th year, gives visitors a peek behind the curtain of local farms, vineyards, and artisanal food producers. This self-guided adventure highlights the area's commitment to sustainable agriculture and culinary excellence.
Oysters, of course, feature prominently in local food experiences. We particularly love the patience of the staff at Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market in Greenport, who will teach you to wield a knife and shuck a bucket of oysters if it’s your first time doing so. (We also enjoyed their clam chowder!) The casual, friendly vibe at Little Fish in Southold, which is just a short stroll from Kenney’s Beach, will definitely also be on our repeat list.
City escape, country charm
One of the North Fork's biggest draws is its proximity to New York City. Just a two-hour drive from Manhattan (or an easy train ride to Greenport), it's a perfect getaway for urbanites craving a taste of rural life and world-class wines. This accessibility, paired with natural beauty and evolving amenities, has sparked a tourism boom, especially among wine aficionados and food lovers.
Beyond the vines, visitors can cycle through picturesque landscapes, kayak in tranquil bays, or simply lounge on unspoiled beaches. Charming towns like Greenport and Southold offer boutique shopping and art galleries, rounding out the North Fork's appeal as a multifaceted destination.
Virtuoso recently reported that there is a 70% increase in interest in culinary travel, including wine-focused experiences. As the North Fork evolves, it's fortunately striking a delicate balance between growth and preservation. New hotels and restaurants are carefully integrated to maintain the area's rural character and agricultural roots. This thoughtful approach is key to the North Fork's success as a wine tourism destination, promising visitors an authentic experience that celebrates the best of Long Island's wine country.
If you are ready to try an up-and-coming wine and food lover's destination, the North Fork just might be right for you. We live for culinary travel and experiences at Singular Sojourns, and can't wait to plan your dream journey!
